How is CLB Calculated from CELPIP Scores?
The Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) is Canada's national standard for measuring English language proficiency. The CELPIP General Test is one of two tests designated by IRCC to prove your English ability for immigration.
Listening & Reading (Computer-Scored)
Both the Listening and Reading sections consist of 38 scored multiple-choice questions. Your raw score (number correct) is converted to a CELPIP level (3-12) which directly equals your CLB level. There is no penalty for guessing โ always answer every question. Because test versions vary in difficulty, exact score thresholds are adjusted through statistical equating.
Speaking (Human-Rated)
Speaking is evaluated by at least 3 independent trained raters on four equally weighted criteria: Content/Coherence, Vocabulary, Listenability (pronunciation, rhythm, intonation), and Task Fulfillment. Your final speaking CLB is derived from the average of these criteria scores.
Writing (Human-Rated)
Writing is evaluated by at least 4 independent trained raters on: Content/Coherence, Vocabulary, Readability (grammar, paragraphing, punctuation), and Task Fulfillment. If raters disagree significantly, a benchmark rater resolves the score.
Why Your CLB Matters for Express Entry
Language proficiency is the single biggest factor in CRS scoring. You can earn up to 136 points for your first official language. Scoring CLB 9+ in all four skills significantly boosts your chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA).
